Importance and Legacy to China
GOOD
Under the reign of Deng Xiaoping, China developed and became the rising country that we see today. With Deng Xiaoping's reforms and his encouragement of the industrialization of the country, China's economy boomed and prospered. As a result of his reforms, the economy boomed and industrial output rose. China developed into the world's fastest developing economy and will have the second largest economy by 2022. He also increased global trade and set up SEZ's ( Special Economic Zones) to attract foreign capital. This improved wealth on the coast and raised the standard of living of the people. Deng Xiaoping biggest achievement was combining the Communist Party's socialist ideology and the adoption of market economic practices.
BAD
Deng did many great things to help increase the output of the economy, but his reforms also had many adverse side effects. As a result of his reforms and an increase emphasis of urbanization, many people were crowded into cities and small buildings. Much of the air pollution and the cancerous villages found in China today are directly impacted by the economic reforms put into legislation. This new emphasis on the economy also created a massive wealth gap. The businessmen were making massive profits, while farmers and rural people had fewer and fewer opportunities to gain wealth or achieve a higher social status. Deng Xiaoping regime was also marred by constant Human Right Violations. Opponents of him would be thrown in jail, and political prisoners would face brutal treatment in prisons. The introduction of controversial policies like the One Child Policy, haven't helped. The abandoning of infant girls and the one sided male to female ratio are directly connected to this. The biggest human right violation is the Tiananmen Square Massacre. In May 1989, a million Chinese citizens protested in central Beijing for democratic rights and for the communist leaders to resign. They protested for nearly a month, before Chinese troops fired on the protestors, killing an estimated three hundred people, while arresting over ten thousand. The use of propaganda to cover up this event to the Chinese people and portray and the Communist party in a good light is equally as bad.
Overall
Overall, I think Deng Xiaoping did some great things for China. He improved the economy and his propelled his nation to becoming a first world country. However, those things offset by the numerous human right violations, use of propaganda, and negative effects of economic reforms he passed. Without him, China definitely would not be the economic powerhouse it is now. However, I still think Deng Xiaoping was not good for China because of the oppression of citizen's political rights.
